HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION
An enduring family commitment
Since its founding in 1946, the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation has supported the creation of programs to benefit people with Intellectual Disabilities, their families, and their communities.
In its early years the Foundation invested in university programs focused on IDD research.
During President Kennedy’s administration, JPKF’s thought leadership helped to shape federal law benefiting the IDD community. The Foundation also was central in bringing awareness to the IDD community and expanding federal investment in Intellectual Disability research.

The Foundation was instrumental in the founding of Special Olympics.
In 1980 the Foundation launched its Public Policy Fellowship Program for emerging leaders. Fellows work alongside leading federal lawmakers on public policy benefiting the IDD community.
